The setting

A returning client and a cottage full of character

This charming cottage in the village of Grewelthorpe, near Ripon, had recently been bought by a returning client who asked us to install a new wood burning stove as part of their renovation. The combination of the new stove and the property's original stone walls, complete with their traditional uneven plaster reveal, created the perfect setting for a classic cottage fireplace, blending beautifully with the character of the home while giving an efficient, practical heat source.

The flue

Routed up through the house, out above the ridge

Alongside the stove and hearth we installed a complete insulated internal stainless steel flue system. It rises directly from the top of the stove in a powder-coated black twin-wall finish with a 200mm external diameter, continues up through the first-floor bedroom into the loft space, where a 45-degree offset was introduced to clear the roof ridge. It then passes through the roof on a high-quality lead weather flashing with an EPDM rubber collar for a durable, watertight seal, and terminates around one metre above the ridge with an anti-downdraught cowl for reliable performance in all weather.

Throughout, the flue was securely supported with heavy-duty steel brackets and fixings for long-term stability and compliance with current standards. To complete the project we installed and commissioned a Dik Geurts Ivar 8 with a log store base, together with a carbon monoxide alarm, then fully tested and demonstrated it so the customer was confident in its safe and efficient operation before handover.

The thinking

A stove for a cottage without relying on a chimney

This Grewelthorpe project is a good example of a cottage installation where the flue design is as important as the stove. The Ivar 8 gives the room a confident freestanding focal point, while the internal twin-wall flue solves the route safely through the house, bedroom, loft and roof. That is typical of no-chimney work: the stove is visible, but the route above it decides whether it will draw well.

On a property like this, the survey checks the room volume, stove position, floor and hearth, combustible clearances, ceiling and joist positions, roof pitch and where the terminal can finish above the ridge. Those checks are general to every twin-wall flue job, and they stop a cottage stove from becoming a messy compromise.

Here the black powder-coated pipe sits comfortably against the stone wall, then the stainless insulated system continues through the upper floors with fire-stopping, brackets and a weathered roof penetration.
